👍 thumbs up Skin Tones — All 5 Variants

The thumbs up is one of the most-used approval gestures on the planet: it says “yes”, “sounds good” and “well done” in a single tap. Because the hand is the focus of the gesture, skin-tone modifiers matter here more than on most emoji — the same approval can be sent with your own skin tone, or left in the default yellow when the sender wants to stay neutral. All five modifier variants are encoded in Unicode and copied exactly like the base character.

The five variants

Every variant copies exactly like the base character: tap a card and the sequence is on your clipboard, ready to paste anywhere. Skin-tone modifiers (U+1F3FB–U+1F3FF) were added to the standard in Unicode 8.0 (2015). thumbs up itself was added in Emoji E0.6 (2010).

Usage and context

In group chats it usually lands as a quick acknowledgment: plan confirmed, message received, task finished. Adding a modifier makes it read as coming from you personally, which is why replies like “got it 👍🏽” feel more present than the plain yellow version. Keep the culture warning in mind: in a few regions the gesture itself is still offensive, and a modifier does not change that.

The profile warning matters: in parts of the Middle East and historically in Greece the thumb-up gesture is an insult, so the base meaning can flip entirely depending on the reader's region.
