Symbols Emoji — Signs, Arrows, Zodiac and Keycaps

Symbols collects 224 emoji on EmojiSelect — the transport signs, warnings, arrows, religious symbols, zodiac signs, AV symbols, gender marks, math signs, punctuation, currency marks and keycaps that make up emoji's signposting system. It is the most literal category: most of its characters began life as typographic symbols before they were adopted into emoji, and many have codepoints that predate emoji by decades.

That typographic heritage is useful. A ✅ or a ⚠️ behaves like punctuation with a picture; arrows point, hearts rate, stars score. This is also the category where our developer tools shine: every symbol page carries HTML entities, codepoints, and the full set of copy formats, because symbols are the emoji developers actually embed in interfaces.

The 224 entries are ordered by subcategory — transport signs, warnings, arrows, religion, zodiac, AV, gender, math, punctuation, currency, keycaps, alphanumerics and geometric shapes — and each one links to its detail page with every copy format and the related emoji that share its meaning.

Why it matters

Symbols do interface work. They mark status (🟢🔴), express judgment (✅❌), navigate (⬅️➡️), and score (⭐). Because the same mark can be a text-style symbol or an emoji depending on variation selectors, we document the difference between U+2705 and a plain check mark on every relevant page. Many of these codepoints predate emoji entirely — the black heart suit U+2665 has existed since Unicode 1.1 (1993), decades before the emoji heart that borrows it.
