Flags Emoji — Countries, Subdivisions and the Special Four

Flags holds 270 emoji on EmojiSelect. Nearly all of them are country flags, and each is technically unusual: a flag is not a single codepoint but a pair of regional indicator symbols — the letters US become 🇺🇸 when the system recognizes the pair. That design choice from Unicode 6.0 (2010) keeps the standard neutral: the consortium never decided which territories count as countries, it just lets the pairs render.

Beyond the countries, the category includes three subdivision flags — England, Scotland and Wales — built as tag sequences, plus four special flags with their own codepoints: the pirate flag, the checkered flag, the rainbow flag and the white flag. Why it matters

Flag emoji appear most in travel, sport and identity contexts — the 🏳️‍🌈 of pride, the 🇯🇵 of a trip report, the checkered flag of a finished project. Because flags render inconsistently on older systems (Windows famously showed letter pairs for years, adding flag support only in 2016), we note rendering caveats where they matter.
